Every Peppers product page lists what that frame is made of: lens material and thickness, base curve, coatings, frame material, hinge and fit. This page explains what those words mean. Not every model has every feature. The product page says exactly which ones it has.

Lenses

Polarized

A polarized lens has a filter that blocks horizontally oriented light waves, the ones that bounce off water, snow, glass and pavement as glare. It cuts the glare without just making everything darker. It improves depth perception and overall visual comfort.

UV protection is a separate thing

Polarization does nothing for UV. Peppers lenses block 100% of UVA, UVB and UVC light, and that's a separate feature from the polarized filter. A lens can have one without the other.

TAC lenses, 1.0mm to 1.8mm

TAC (triacetate cellulose) is a layered lens material. Peppers lenses run from 1.0mm to 1.8mm thick, and each product page states the thickness. The lenses are shatterproof and meet and exceed ANSI standards.

Base curve

Base curve is how curved the lens is. 4 base is nearly flat, 6 base is a moderate wrap, and 8 base is a full wrap that blocks light and wind from the sides. The fit guide covers which one to pick.

Coatings

SaltShield™

A multi-layered anti-salt-water lens coating. Salt residue doesn't etch or cloud the lens.

BackClear™

An anti-reflective coating on the rear lens surface. Sun coming from behind you doesn't bounce off the inside of the lens into your eye, so you're not looking at your own reflection.

Hydrophobic coating

Water and dust bead and run off instead of sitting on the lens.

Frames

Unsinkable™

Buoyant frame construction: Grilamid with a floating core, or a TPX frame. They float. Drop a pair off the gunwale and it stays on the surface. Shop Polarized Floating.

Grilamid

A high-performance nylon polymer. It's light, it's impact-resistant, and it holds its shape in heat and cold. It's Peppers' primary frame material.

TR90

A flexible thermoplastic. It bends rather than snaps.

Hand-built recycled acetate

Hinges and nose pads

• Internal temple hinge: the hinge sits inside the temple, with nothing exposed to snag or corrode.
• Block hinge lock: a hinge that locks at full open.
• Hydrophilic Megol nose pads: a soft grip material that grips harder when it's wet.

Prescription

Select frames are Rx-able, which means they can take prescription lenses. Peppers doesn't fit prescription lenses. An optician does.

Backed for life
